Simmons Citrate Differential Medium, 100g

This 100g bottle of Simmons Citrate Agar is a differential medium used to determine whether bacteria can utilize citrate as their sole carbon source. Organisms capable of citrate utilization produce alkaline carbonate, which shifts a pH indicator in the agar from green to blue, providing a clear visual result. Citrate-negative organisms may display weak growth but will not cause a color change. The agar is supplied as a dehydrated powder in a plastic open-mouth bottle. To prepare, mix 24g of medium with 1L of deionized water and bring to a boil while stirring until completely dissolved, then pour into petri dishes and allow to cool and solidify. Each 100g bottle makes approximately 4 liters of prepared medium. An SDS is included for safe handling and storage information.
