Product Description
This earth science wall chart presents the full sequence of an earthquake, from the buildup of stress in the Earth's crust to the surface damage that follows. Measuring 75 × 100 cm, it is sized for visibility across a classroom or lab and works as a standing reference during units on plate tectonics, seismology, and geologic hazards.
The chart opens with the underlying mechanism: earthquakes are vibrations produced when rocks strained beyond their elastic limit rupture and snap into a new position, releasing energy as seismic waves. A sequence of cutaway blocks walks through this elastic rebound process, showing rock under accumulating strain, the moment of rupture along a fault, and the release of energy that radiates outward as waves.
A central section compares the motion produced by each major wave type. Primary (P) waves compress and expand the ground in the direction of travel and pass through any Earth material. Secondary (S) waves move particles back and forth at right angles to the direction of propagation and travel only through solids. Surface waves, the slower but most destructive group, are shown as Love waves, which shift the ground from side to side, and Rayleigh waves, which roll the surface up and down like ocean swells. Placing these side by side helps students connect each wave type to the distinct ground motion and damage pattern it creates.
Additional diagrams clarify the geometry of an earthquake by relating its focus, the point of initial movement along the fault, to its epicenter, the point directly above on the surface, and to the expanding seismic wave fronts that radiate from the focus. A final panel documents the effects of earthquakes through photographs of structural and ground damage, and a closing summary of major concepts reinforces the key terms covered across the chart.
