This earth science wall chart presents the full sequence of an earthquake, from the buildup of stress in the Earth's crust to the surface damage that follows. The chart opens with the underlying mechanism: earthquakes are vibrations produced when rocks strained beyond their elastic limit rupture and snap into a new position, releasing energy as seismic waves.
