This septarian calcite plate measures approximately 8 x 6 inches and weighs just under 2 pounds. Septarian nodules form when calcite is deposited in the center of a solidified mass of sediment, and this plate is a cross-sectional slice displaying the light carbonate center against the darker surrounding sediment.
