Halite is commonly known as table salt (sodium chloride) and is a soft, white to transparent mineral that grows into cleavable cubes. Halite is an excellent example of cubic cleavage. When broken, it continually fractures into smaller cubes, making it ideal for lessons on cleavage planes, crystal systems, and how evaporite deposits form in nature through the evaporation of saline water bodies.
