Cellular Respiration and Fermentation Distance Learning Kit

This distance learning kit allows students to explore how yeast cells engage in aerobic respiration and fermentation when metabolizing sugars. Learners expose live yeast to three potential food sources — glucose, sucrose, and lactose — and use a pH indicator to determine indirectly how effectively each sugar is metabolized. The kit includes 10 mL of 0.5% litmus, 1 g dehydrated yeast, 5 mL of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide, glucose, sucrose, and lactose QuickSolutions (each making 30 mL), six plastic cups, two plastic scoops, two pipettes, an instruction manual, and SDS sheets. Materials are sufficient for two groups of students. Designed for home schooling and remote instruction, the kit helps students understand that yeast can use different metabolic pathways with varying degrees of efficiency. For laboratory use only.
