Chromatography of Amino Acids Small Group Learning Kit

The Chromatography of Amino Acids kit from Innovating Science introduces learners to the structure and function of amino acids and the chromatographic methods scientists use to separate and identify them. Students experiment with three known amino acids using paper chromatography, then apply their results to identify the components of an unknown amino acid mixture. The kit includes ninhydrin powder (0.5 g), four bottles of 95% ethanol solution (25 mL each), two bottles of chromatography solvent (25 mL each), alanine, glycine, and leucine controls (10 mL each), an unknown amino acid mixture (10 mL), four capillary tubes, one centrifuge tube, and seven chromatography sheets. A teacher's or parent's manual, student worksheet copymasters, and safety data sheets are included. The kit provides materials for 5 groups of students. Required materials not included: paper towels, a chromatography chamber (250 mL beaker or similar), and plastic wrap. For laboratory use only.
