Nanotechnology Synthesis of a Ferrofluid Experiment Kit

This Nanotechnology: Synthesis of a Ferrofluid kit allows students to explore nanotechnology, nanomaterials, and their applications in modern technology. Students form magnetite nanoparticles through a precipitation reaction, then use a surfactant to create a colloidal suspension (ferrofluid). The ferrofluid demonstrates interesting patterns and movement when exposed to a magnet, even moving against gravity. Materials sufficient for 15 groups. The kit includes 8g ferrous chloride, 22g ferric chloride, 20mL 10N hydrochloric acid, 2 bottles of ammonium hydroxide, 20mL tetramethylammonium hydroxide, 15 pipettes, 15 petri dishes, a teacher's manual, student study guide copymasters, and safety data sheets.
