Genetics of Blood Type Inheritance and Paternity Small Group Learning Kit

This Innovating Science experiment kit introduces learners to the genetics of blood types through hands-on activities using simulated blood samples. Blood typing plays a role in forensic investigations and medical procedures, and this kit allows students to investigate the genetic basis of blood type determination, explore possible inheritance patterns, and examine how those patterns express themselves. The kit includes four simulated blood samples (mother, child, Sample X, and Sample Y) at 3 ml each, one bottle of simulated Anti-A serum (6 ml), one bottle of simulated Anti-B serum (6 ml), 20 blood typing trays, and one package of toothpicks. Students determine the blood type of four unknown samples and use their results to resolve a fictional paternity dispute. The kit also explores cross-cutting concepts such as the relationship between structure and function, cause and effect, and builds skills in analyzing and interpreting data. Designed for small group learning, the kit provides enough materials for 5 groups of students and includes safety data sheets, an instruction manual, and student worksheet copymasters.
