AP Biology Investigation #8 Bacterial Transformation Kit for 8 Student Groups

This AP Biology Investigation #8: Bacterial Transformation kit allows students to genetically engineer bacteria through transformation with a plasmid that confers antibiotic resistance. Students examine the number of resistant bacteria to determine transformation efficiency. Materials sufficient for 8 lab groups. Meets AP Science Practices 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, and Big Idea 3. The kit includes 30mL sterile 0.05M calcium chloride, 16 sterile volumetric pipets, 8 pipet bulbs, 8 micropipettes with plunger, plastic and microcentrifuge tubes, 8 sterile inoculating loops, 40 petri dishes, 4 x 200mL Luria agar, freeze-dried E. coli culture, and Luria broth tube. A coupon is included for perishable materials (ampicillin, pUC19 plasmid, tryptic soy broth and agar slants, sterile pipet, and cotton swabs). Required materials not included: large beaker, hot plate or water bath, microwave, markers, microfuge tube racks, ice container, and optional 37°C incubator.
