Starch Agar Differential Medium, 100g

This 100g bottle of Starch Agar is a dehydrated differential medium used to determine whether bacteria produce extracellular enzymes capable of hydrolyzing starch. To prepare, mix 25g with 1L of deionized water and bring to a boil while stirring until completely dissolved, then pour into petri dishes and allow to cool. After inoculation and incubation at 37°C for 48 hours, the agar surface is flooded with a potassium iodide solution (not included). Organisms that produce starch-hydrolyzing enzymes display a clear zone around the growth area, while starch-containing regions turn blue-black. Each bottle makes 4L of growth medium.
