This 500g bottle of Starch Agar is designed for testing whether bacteria produce extracellular enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of starch. Prepared at a concentration of 25g per liter, it provides ample quantity for multiple experiments. To use, inoculate the agar surface with bacterial cultures and incubate at 37 °C for 48 hours. After incubation, flood the surface with a potassium/potassium iodide solution. Bacteria that produce starch-hydrolyzing enzymes will show a clear zone around their growth, while the surrounding agar turns blue-black.
