The Nylon 6-10 Rope Trick kit demonstrates one of the most memorable reactions in polymer chemistry: the formation of a solid nylon strand at the boundary between two liquids. When the two supplied solutions are carefully layered, a film of nylon forms where they meet and can be drawn upward with tongs or a stirring rod, pulling out a continuous rope of polymer in a single dramatic motion. It gives students a direct, visible look at how small molecules link into long-chain polymers.
The reaction is an interfacial polycondensation. One solution contains 1,6-hexanediamine in water with sodium hydroxide, and the other contains sebacoyl chloride dissolved in hexane. Where the water and hexane layers meet, the diamine and the acid chloride react to form nylon 6-10, joining end to end and releasing the strand that students pull from the interface. The activity brings the abstract idea of monomers, repeating units, and condensation reactions into concrete form, making it a strong fit for units on polymers, organic chemistry, and materials.
The kit includes both reagent solutions, 25 mL each, along with an instruction manual and safety data sheet packet covering procedure, background, and handling. It is intended for laboratory and classroom use and is suitable for ages 13 and up with adult supervision. Because it contains regulated reagents, the kit ships under the 49 CFR 173.4 small-quantity exception for domestic highway or rail transport only.
