Melde's Vibrating String Apparatus

Melde's Vibrating String Apparatus provides an effective method for introducing students to the concept of standing waves. The apparatus consists of a string and an oscillator, allowing students to generate different frequencies and visually determine wavelength, period, and amplitude. Tension is adjusted by placing varying amounts of mass in a tray that hangs off the side of a table or lab bench using the included pulley. A string undergoing transverse vibration illustrates many features common to all vibrating acoustic systems, analogous to the vibrations of a violin or guitar string. The apparatus requires up to 6V AC input and will operate at both 50Hz and 60Hz depending on the supply frequency. Power is supplied via 4mm plug leads (power source not included).
