Savart's toothed wheel consists of four toothed wheels, each 7.5 cm in diameter, spaced 6 mm apart on a common shaft. The shaft has a projecting spindle with a slight taper at its end for use with a whirling table (sold separately). When spun at varying speeds, the different tooth counts produce distinct pitches, allowing students to investigate the relationship between frequency and perceived pitch in acoustics experiments.
