The Electrophorus is a classic physics apparatus for demonstrating electrostatic charge through the process of induction. It consists of a nonconductive insulating bakelite disc measuring 6" in diameter and a 3.5" diameter metal grounding plate with an attached 5" insulating ebonite handle. To use, an excess negative charge is created on the insulating plate by rubbing it with fur or wool. When the metal ground plate contacts the charged insulating plate, positive and negative charges separate within the metal plate. Grounding the top of the plate leaves it with a net positive charge, which can then be measured or used to generate sparks. This apparatus provides hands-on learning that reinforces electrostatic principles in a memorable way.
