The Leyden Jar is a device for storing electric charge, first invented by Ewald G. von Kleist in 1745. This educational version consists of a metal cup (outer plate), an insulating plastic cup (dielectric), and a smaller metal cup with a hook and metal ball (inner plate). The jar measures 8 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter.
The inner plate includes a hook and ball attachment that makes it easy to charge from a static electricity generator. The device can be used to duplicate many classic static electricity experiments and to demonstrate the function of a dielectric and the principles behind capacitance. Instructions are included. Designed for classroom demonstrations in electrostatics.
