This Volta Pile apparatus is a fully functioning replica of Alessandro Volta's original device. The pile consists of 1.5" zinc and copper plates stacked in alternation and separated by sheets of felt soaked in an electrolyte. The electrolyte allows electricity to pass between layers, enabling voltage to be measured between the plates and at the ends of the stack. The apparatus stands approximately 7" tall on a 3.5" square base with a height of 1.5". A cable on the base measures 5.75" long and reaches the top of the unit. The device demonstrates the fundamental principles of electrochemistry and the generation of electrical current through chemical reactions.
